About us

What are we about?

Nourishing Mountains is a community oriented, not for profit initiative.

Our goal is to make organic food as affordable as possible to the people of the Blue Mountains while still rewarding all the participants in the supply chain fairly.

We aspire to source our produce directly from local farmers. When organically grown produce is not available locally, it is sourced from certified organic wholesalers.

How did we start out?

It all started in 2012 when Orit Holtzman, a functional medicine doctor together with Kaya Jongen, a life coah and non-violent communication trainer, founded the group. Inspried by a thread on the Blue Mountains Natural Parenting Facebook page, where people commented on how they would love to be able to receive fresh organic fruit and vegetable boxes that would take off their shoulders the chore of going to the shop to do the shopping themselves. For parents of little children or for people who don't have easy access, getting to the shop can be challenging.

They started out by sorting in our car port in Katoomba in summer and in Kaya's living room in winter. Volunteers would come every week to help us sort and we had beautiful, organic fruit and veg boxes at close to wholesale prices.

How's it Going?

In 2015, Skye Evans took over management of the Nourishing Mountains, and she is still running it toay, with the help of some volunteers who are paid mostly in produce.  Our shopfront it exclusively online, and our sorting headquarters are at Kookaburra Dreaming, a small hobby farm and home in Bullaburra.
